Across the pond there’s been an unstoppable march toward painted furniture for children, in a whole variety of colours. You’ll find bright juicy fruits to florescent pinks to dusty pastels, but possibly the most pervasive colours are the earthy, you might even say, ‘sludgy’ browns and greys. They’re everywhere at the moment, even surprisingly popular for nursery furniture and cribs.

As designers and retailers of children’s furniture (www.thechildrensfurniturecompany.com), we’ve noticed that here in the UK people still tend toward white, but recently they have started to branch out, adding a splash of colour into their kid’s bedrooms – a pink toy box, an orange bookcase; and whilst we haven’t quite gone down the muddy route as yet, there is one fantastic colour that has come onto the radar and that colour is ‘soft grey’.

And why does this colour work so well? Soft grey adds a new dynamic, striking a balance of subtle sophistication with adaptability. It co-ordinates easily with several colours for matching bedding and soft furnishings, from reds and pinks to blues and oranges; and will stand the test of time, lasting a child through childhood and then well into teenage years.
