Edinburgh Zoo opened in 1913, in leafy hillside parkland just ten minutes from the centre of Edinburgh. Recognised as one of the world’s leading zoos. Lots of animals including all the favourites but the zoo's principal claim to fame is its army of penguins, the most assembled in captivity anywhere. At 2pm, every day between March and October, the penguin parade is one of Edinburgh's most bizarre sights.

Cotswold Wildlife Park
Burford, Oxfordshire OX18 4JW
(01993) 823006
The Cotswold Wildlife Park is set in 140 acres of gardens and parkland with a Listed Gothic style Manor House at its centre. The Park, which has been open to the public since 1970, is home to a fascinating and varied collection of mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates from all over the world. Many of these are endangered in the wild such as the Asiatic lions, Amur leopards and Red Pandas and are all part of international breeding programmes. Many animals will amuse you with their antics – the meerkats, penguins (see them being fed and hear an interesting commentary at 11am or 4pm daily, except on Fridays), the Lar gibbons and the large black Siamang gibbons, others will fascinate like the reptiles, leaf-cutting ants or the tarantulas.
One of the principle delights for visitors is the varied collection of plants, trees, flowering shrubs and imaginative container planting and hanging baskets which inspire gardeners with the selection of plants used. This is the ideal venue for gardeners and their children. Events over the summer months include Birds of Prey Flying demonstrations, car rallies and Reptile Awareness Days. Animal related events are subject to weather conditions.
There is something for all ages at the Park including the farmyard area, narrow-gauge railway, adventure playground and brass-rubbing centre. Facilities are excellent with a large self-service cafeteria, picnic areas, kiosks, gift shops for adults and children. Dogs are permitted provided they are on leads at all times and car-parking is free of charge. Walk-a-round Park open daily throughout the year, a great family day out with plenty to do.
