Dance classes for children can start from as young as 2? years with an introduction to basic movement and rhythm. There are a number of classes available to children from 4? upwards including Ballet, Disco/ Freestyle, Modern, Street Jazz, Tap, Irish Dancing and Contemporary.
Children can progress from beginners to professional level following the syllabus of various dance boards such as the Royal Academy of Dancing (R.A.D), Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (I.S.T.D), International Dance Teachers Association (I.D.T.A) and the National Association of Dance Teachers( N.A.T.D)
Music and Movement
Music and Movement classes are for pre-school children and their mothers as a way of introducing children to basic movement at an early age. These classes will improve a child's co-ordination skills whilst also stimulating the child's creativity and imagination
Ballet
Ballet classes are offered by a range of institutions such as Royal Academy of Dancing (R.A.D), Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (I.S.T.D) and may be taken as examinations. Within the I.S.T.D. there are two ballet faculties, the Cecchetti Faculty and Imperial. Ballet forms the basis for all other dance styles as it helps develop strength, posture, grace, co-ordination, muscle tone, technique and musical awareness.
Disco/Freestyle
Disco and Freestyle dance is fast, acrobatic, funky and complex! This style originally became popular in this country in the 1980s, after disco films like Saturday Night Fever. Students can take examinations in this style at many schools work towards performances and competitions.
Modern
Modern is the technical form of jazz, which all the musical stars study. Modern has a variety of styles including strong jazz style and a slow lyrical style. Classes improve a child's sense of performance and are excellent for developing co-ordination, balance, style and confidence. This dance form is also offered at examination level by most dance schools.
Street Jazz
Jazz is a very current form of dance and draws movements from music video and street forms such as Breakdance classes are taught to current chart and dance music and are generally non-examined.
Tap
Tap dancing is a rhythmical stimulating style of dance, which is a fun way of developing co-ordination and skill. From beginners to advanced, examination are available.
Irish Dancing
Irish dancing focuses upon mixing fast, intricate footwork with a straight, upright torso. Excellent for improving co-ordination, style and fitness, this Irish National dance form is often taught to students for competition and performance work.
Contemporary
Contemporary dance incorporates many different styles of current dance forms fused together, most classes will contain exercises, diagonal work and longer sequences to develop joint flexibility, co-ordination, balance, confidence, performance style, spatial awareness, musicality and technique. Some groups will also work creatively giving participants the opportunity to choreograph small sections of movement themselves.
